What is TAO?

TAO is the native token of Bittensor, a decentralized network that creates an open market for machine intelligence. Bittensor connects AI models (miners) with evaluators (validators) in specialized subnets, each focused on a different AI capability like inference, training, data processing, or compute.

TAO serves multiple purposes: validators stake TAO to gain voting power and earn rewards, miners are rewarded with TAO emissions for providing valuable AI services, and subnet creators lock TAO to register new subnets. With Dynamic TAO (dTAO), each subnet has its own alpha token priced through an AMM pool against TAO, allowing market-driven allocation of network resources.

The total supply of TAO is capped at 21 million tokens (similar to Bitcoin). New TAO is emitted every 12 seconds (one block), with emissions distributed across subnets based on their relative performance and stake-weighted validator evaluations through the Yuma Consensus mechanism.

Key Concepts

Subnets

Specialized networks within Bittensor, each focused on a specific AI task. There are currently 128 active subnets covering inference, training, compute, data, and more.

Dynamic TAO (dTAO)

Each subnet has its own alpha token with an AMM pricing mechanism. Stakers choose which subnets to back by buying alpha tokens, creating market-driven resource allocation.

Yuma Consensus

The incentive mechanism that aligns miners and validators. Validators evaluate miner outputs and reach consensus on rewards. Miners who provide the best AI services earn the most.

Emissions

New TAO tokens are created every block (12 seconds) and distributed to miners and validators based on their contributions. Total supply is capped at 21 million TAO.

Staking

TAO holders stake to validators on specific subnets to earn yield. Staking also provides security: validators with more stake have more weight in consensus.

Registration

New subnets must lock TAO to register. Within the immunity period (~4 months / 864,000 blocks) they cannot be deregistered, giving new projects time to establish themselves.
